Despite much adverse publicity by the misinformed, PVC-u Windows and doors are environmentally friendly and a sustainable option. In fact Dr. Patrick Moor the founding member of Greenpeace said in 2006 - "There is absolutely no evidence that Vinyl damages human health or the environment. PVC is durable, low maintenance, recyclable and performs well in LCA tests"
The PVC-u system that we install at E Windows has already removed all traces of Cadmium and has also removed lead based stabilisers from its formulation replacing it with a more environmentally friendly Calcium Organic product.
Green Guide
The Green guide is a document published by BRE and used by the industry to indentify the environmental impact of construction products. LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) is carried out on individual products to assess the impact of the product from the "Cradle to the Grave", previously PVC-U windows and doors did not compare favourably with alternative materials. A recent comprehensive study by BRE( Building Research Establishment) concluded that PVCU Window and door products had a life expectancy of at least 35 years. Previously this was 25 years. This acknowledgement recognising the reality of PVC Serviceability, reduced the requirements and cost for transportation, labour, disposal etc., resulting in the awarding of a "B" status for the revised Green guide. This position firmly places PVC-U Windows as environmentally friendly products.
As part of our commitment to the environment all our post- consumer PVC-U waste is collected from our distribution depots for re-cycling rather than land fill.
As part of our ongoing product development initiative, we also now have Energy efficient products available. Window Energy Rating is a system specifically for windows and follows the same principle for white goods and other energy schemes. Based on a rating of A-G (A being the best), windows are rated by taking into consideration not only the "U" value of the window but also the positive solar gain by the use of specialist glass and the air leakage of the window. This combination ensures a more realistic approach to rating. For more information on how to buy and install energy efficient windows, contact us direct to discuss all our energy rated products.
